Mercedes-Maybach S 580: The Executive S-Class

par | Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Maybach returned in 2014 as a Mercedes-Benz sub-brand, with the S-Class providing the foundation for its flagship saloon. The Maybach version extended the formula with more space for passengers, additional comfort features and a greater emphasis on the experience of travelling in the back.

The S 580 continued this approach with the latest generation of the S-Class. Mercedes added almost 20 cm to the wheelbase compared with the long-wheelbase model, creating significantly more room alongside reclining seats, improved sound insulation and suspension settings developed for smoother journeys.

EXTERIOR

Longer proportions

The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 measures 5,469 mm in length, with a wheelbase of 3,396 mm. The extra length over the long-wheelbase S-Class is concentrated around the cabin, where the longer rear doors provide easier access and create more space between the front and rear seats.

Despite the increase in size, the basic proportions remain closely related to the S-Class. The extended body and fixed quarter windows in the C-pillars are among the clearest ways to distinguish the Maybach when viewed from the side.

Maybach design details

The front receives a distinctive grille with vertical chrome elements and Maybach lettering, together with a chrome fin running along the bonnet. Maybach emblems appear by the rear doors, while dedicated wheel designs provide another point of distinction.

Two-tone paintwork is available as an option, with the separating line applied by hand. Buyers can also choose a single exterior colour for a more discreet specification.

INTERIOR

The rear compartment

The benefits of the longer wheelbase are more apparent once inside. Executive seats are fitted on either side, with independent adjustment for the backrest and seat cushion. The seat behind the front passenger can be reclined while an electrically extending leg rest and heel rest provide further support.

The Chauffeur Package also allows the front seat to be moved further forward, increasing the available space behind it. Mercedes extended the adjustment range of the leg rest by approximately 50 mm compared with the previous Maybach S-Class.

Comfort and technology

Maybach developed several functions specifically around comfort. Available equipment includes calf massage and heating for the neck and shoulders, while adaptive rear lighting lets each passenger alter the brightness, position and colour temperature of their individual reading light.

Additional insulation contributes to a quieter interior. Mercedes added insulating foam around the rear wheel arches and thicker laminated glass for the fixed quarter windows, further reducing the intrusion of road and exterior noise.

Dedicated displays provide access to MBUX and allow many of the car’s comfort and entertainment functions to be controlled independently. Electrically operated rear doors are also available and can be opened or closed without reaching for the door handle.

First-Class configuration

The optional First-Class layout replaces the centre seat with a continuous console between the two Executive seats. This increases storage capacity while creating two clearly separated seating areas.

Folding tables make it possible to work during a journey, while available options include refrigerated storage and dedicated champagne flutes. An extensive choice of leather, wood veneers and trim combinations provides considerable scope for personalisation.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE

V8 and 48V system

The S 580 uses a 3,982 cc twin-turbocharged V8 producing 503 CV and 700 Nm of torque. It is supported by a 48-volt integrated starter-generator capable of temporarily providing an additional 20 CV and 200 Nm.

Power is delivered through the nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The electrical assistance also allows the engine to restart smoothly and supports the powertrain during acceleration.

Performance and drivetrain

The S 580 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and has an electronically limited maximum speed of 250 km/h.

More relevant to its intended use is where the engine delivers its power. Maximum torque is available from 2,000 rpm, allowing the V8 to accelerate the car without requiring frequent downshifts or high engine speeds.

SUSPENSION AND HANDLING

Ride comfort

AIRMATIC air suspension is included as standard, continuously adjusting the damping to reduce the effect of uneven road surfaces. A dedicated MAYBACH driving mode also softens accelerator response, limits unnecessary gear changes and can start in second gear for smoother acceleration.

Optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL goes further by controlling the suspension at each wheel individually. A camera monitors the road ahead, allowing the system to prepare for certain surface irregularities before the wheels reach them and reduce movement inside the car.

Rear-axle steering

The system allows either 4.5 or 10 degrees of movement. The latter reduces the turning circle from 13.4 to 11.4 metres, a considerable difference in a saloon measuring almost 5.5 metres long.

At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the fronts to improve manoeuvrability. At higher speeds, they turn in the same direction to support stability.

MODEL COMPARISON

Mercedes-Maybach S 580 vs S 680

The S 580 and S 680 share the same dimensions and much of the equipment that defines the Maybach rear-seat experience. The main difference is the engine. The S 680 uses a 6.0-litre V12 producing 612 CV and 900 Nm, compared with 503 CV and 700 Nm from the S 580’s V8.

For buyers primarily interested in comfort, the S 580 provides much of the same experience. The S 680 is the choice for those who specifically value the V12 and its position at the top of the Maybach S-Class range.

Mercedes-Maybach S 580 vs Bentley Flying Spur

The Bentley Flying Spur combines a well-equipped interior with a stronger focus on the experience from behind the wheel. Its rear seats can include individual adjustment, massage functions and a centre console depending on specification.

This gives the Flying Spur a stronger dual role for owners who expect to spend time both behind the wheel and being driven. The Maybach prioritises passenger comfort, with more legroom and Executive seats fitted as standard.

Mercedes-Maybach S 580 vs Rolls-Royce Ghost

The Rolls-Royce Ghost is another alternative, particularly in Extended form, which adds 170 mm to increase space for rear passengers. Both models therefore place considerable attention on chauffeur-driven travel.

Their approaches differ inside. The Maybach offers more digital controls and adjustable comfort systems, while the Ghost focuses on acoustic isolation and a more traditional cabin design.

THE VERDICT

The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 demonstrates how much the character of the S-Class can change when greater attention is given to the passengers in the rear. The longer wheelbase creates the space, while the Executive seats, improved sound insulation and specific suspension settings elevate the experience of being driven.
