GT3 RS vs S/T: Choosing Your Porsche 911

от | Porsche

The Porsche 911 has always been the dream car for driving enthusiasts, but within the current 992 generation, two models stand apart from the rest. The GT3 RS and the 911 S/T occupy a different position from the standard 911 range, one built around aerodynamic load and circuit performance, the other around lightness and a six-speed manual gearbox. Both use the same 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine, yet each offers its own answer to what driving a 911 should feel like.

Two models, one engine

911 GT3 RS

Powered by a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six producing 525 CV at 8,500 rpm, paired with a seven-speed PDK transmission. The engine revs to 9,000 rpm and uses individual throttle bodies derived from Porsche’s motorsport programmes. It is Porsche’s most track-focused road-legal 911 in the 992 generation.

911 S/T

Uses the same 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six. It is paired exclusively with a six-speed GT Sport manual transmission, featuring a lightweight single-mass flywheel and shorter gear ratios than the GT3. Porsche also developed a new lightweight clutch for the S/T, reducing rotating mass by 10.5 kg.

Exterior design

911 GT3 RS

Every element of the GT3 RS exterior follows an aerodynamic function. Its swan-neck rear wing is the tallest ever fitted to a road-legal 911, rising above roofline height, and works alongside active front winglets and side blades in the wheel arches managed by Porsche Active Aerodynamics. CFRP covers the doors, front wings, roof, and front lid. The central radiator in the nose occupies the space where the front luggage compartment sits on other 911 models, leaving no storage at the front.

911 S/T

The S/T uses a retractable rear spoiler with a Gurney flap in place of a fixed wing, giving it a lower visual profile closer to the GT3 Touring. Carbon fibre fenders and doors are fitted as standard. The optional Heritage Design package adds the exclusive Shore Blue Metallic paint, Ceramica wheel rim colour, and gold Porsche logo and 911 S/T designation on the rear. Unlike the GT3 RS, the S/T retains the standard front luggage compartment.

Interior design

911 GT3 RS

The cabin is finished in Race-Tex and carbon-weave trim with full CFRP bucket seats as standard. Four rotary selectors on the steering wheel allow the driver to adjust suspension damping, differential settings, and traction control without looking away from the road. The Clubsport package, included at no extra cost, adds a steel rollover bar, fire extinguisher, and six-point harness mountings. The optional Weissach package extends carbon fibre use further across the interior and chassis.

911 S/T

The instrument cluster and Sport Chrono clock are finished in a classic green colour scheme as standard across the S/T range. The Heritage Design package adds two-tone Black/Classic Cognac semi-aniline leather, a perforated Dinamica roof lining, and a classic Porsche crest on the front, wheel centre caps, steering wheel, and headrests.

Performance

Maximum speed

  • 911 GT3 RS: 296 km/h
  • 911 S/T: 300 km/h

The S/T reaches a marginally higher top speed, aided by its taller top gear ratio in the six-speed manual.

Power

  • 911 GT3 RS: 525 CV (386 kW) at 8,500 rpm
  • 911 S/T: 525 CV (386 kW) at 8,500 rpm

Both models produce identical output from the same 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six with a 9,000 rpm redline.

0–100 km/h

  • 911 GT3 RS: 3.2 seconds
  • 911 S/T: 3.7 seconds

The GT3 RS reaches 100 km/h 0.5 seconds faster, a direct result of the seven-speed PDK’s shift speed.

Kerb weight (DIN)

  • 911 GT3 RS: 1,482 kg
  • 911 S/T: 1,380 kg

The S/T is 102 kilograms lighter, driven by extensive carbon fibre construction and the deletion of rear-axle steering.

Production

  • 911 GT3 RS: Standard production
  • 911 S/T: 1963 units

The GT3 RS is already reserved for Porsche’s most loyal clients, while the S/T takes exclusivity further with a strictly limited run of 1963 units.

Final words

The GT3 RS is built for the track. Its active aerodynamics, PDK transmission, and 860 kg of downforce at 285 km/h make it the more capable car when lap times matter. Drivers who attend circuit events regularly will find it the stronger choice of the two.

The S/T is built for the road. Its 102-kilogram weight advantage over the GT3 RS, combined with the manual gearbox and road-oriented tuning, produce a more involving experience on open roads. The limited production of 1963 units also gives it a distinct position for collectors.
